Climbing | October 2009, Wester Ross, Scotland.
The weather has been awesome in the North and with this in mind Kathryn and I loaded up a car a drove to the highlands. The first frost greeted us in the morning as we climbed Sword of Gideon and Cioch Nose topping out in the fading warm light. The next day rain drove us North where we attempted some landscape work and played on the beach

The idea came into being last year around a typical family dinner (which is more like paintball than a meal). We were talking about a trip when my Grandad piped up and said he wanted to come, so off we all went to France to head down the Ardeche. Much fun was to be had as all the male members of my family and Kathryn set off into a big ditch filled with water. It was an great trip with the only injury sustained being me pulling a muscle laughing at my dad capsizing.

It has been a very bad summer for me this year from an outdoor and photographic point of view. As friends will know I have been struggling with employment and have been running a few projects in the background. Well this summer has seen a good number of very positive meetings and a few photographic sales. Needless to say the climbing and other fun has suffered as a result. It's for the greater good.

Kathryn has been on and on at me to head to Skye and climb one of Scotland’s super classic linkups consisting of Cioch Direct, Arrow Route and Integrity. Not hard by anyone’s standard but unarguably some of the best fun you can have early season in Scotland. We also took some photographs from Elgol and on our way home through Kintail. The tide and the daffodils were out at Eilean Donan

The
Jacobite Steam Train runs in the summer through some of Scotland’s most accessible mountains and features heavily in the Harry Potter films. There are always lots of photographers trying their luck but we had a secret weapon, a 1912 Kodak Plate camera shooting 5x7 inch plates! We were also far more imaginative with our locations for the shoot. We had fun the next weekend on the train riding around with soot in our eyes :O)

England got a little snow this year which was rather nice because I have always wanted to do a few of the Lakeland fells in winter conditions. By the time we got there everything was warming up so we settled for a walk across Striding Edge on Helvellyn and down via Swirral Edge. It was amazing how poorly equipped people were on the fell in both directions. We saw families in trainers and people in full ice climbing gear. People ... you don’t need two tools for Striding Edge!

The annual family skiing trip is always fun, my brother and I donned our kilts and took to the slopes. I was there to ski more than take photos with off piste desires that were not realised because of snowfall and wind but we had an awesome time skiing the pistes on knee deep fresh snow when all the English tourists had gone to the pub to hide from the weather. We also managed to get Kathryn down a gully route much to all our amusements :o)

Landscape | Febuary 2009, Shetland, Scotland.
Kathryn’s flat mate, Tim, has been contracted by NHS Shetland to work as an ER nurse for a few months so what better excuse to head up and have a poke around. We are both fascinated by archaeology and a trip up North has been long overdue. The weather was awful but we did manage a spot of sea kayaking before a wee incident required a quick return to shore. We had a tour of the SAR site and when the weather cleared we wandered round some Viking settlements :o) cheers Tim

Still Life | January 2009, East Fortune Airfield, Scotland.
Kathryn and I spent a wet and windy day wandering round
East Fortune Airfield which was awash with textures and subjects. We were primarily there to work with a new ring flash and get our heads round how it coped with different subject distances and ambient light. Some of the results demonstrate my lack of ability with a flash gun but I am sure it will be a good addition to the collection of gear growing in my closet.
